Meeting and building cyber threat capability

Background 

Downer Professional Services (DPS) was engaged by Defence’s CIOG to provide capability and support to help ameliorate and manage a crucial inside threat program. 

 

The Insider Threat and Investigative Support (ITIS) project saw DPS lead and draft the logging and monitoring framework and acquire resources for Defence with expertise and experience in the network monitoring and security alerts environment that offered analytical and problem-solving skills to proactively monitor, investigate, analyse and document threats associated with the insider threat activities. 

 

What we did 

Downer’s successful engagement included: 

 

  • Reviving and improving a previous Insider Threat program.  
  • Growing overall awareness to help shift Defence culture to a more cyber aware-focused organisation.  
  • Monitoring defence systems for policy violations and reporting security incidents with a focus on the overall maturity of the capability; and 
  • Delivering statistical reports to outline where the misuse occurs most and recommendations to resolve/educate. 

Results 

The ITIS program filled a significant CIOG capability gap and provided ongoing support and future planning.
